Common Questions
How far is Lake Tekapo from Christchurch?
Lake Tekapo is about 227 km from Christchurch, around 3 hours' drive. Your driver breaks up the journey with stops in Fairlie and Burkes Pass.
Can we visit Lake Tekapo in winter?
Yes. Winter brings snow on the peaks and clear, crisp days, and it's one of the best times for stargazing. Your driver handles the alpine roads and adjusts the day to the conditions. Read more about travelling the Southern Alps in winter with a private driver.
Can we go stargazing on a day trip from Christchurch?
Yes. Our stargazing evening includes an afternoon pickup, dinner in the village and a guided summit tour, followed by the drive back. Stargazing starts after dark, so in summer you'll be back very late. Many guests choose to stay the night in Tekapo instead.
What happens if it's cloudy?
Stargazing depends on clear skies. If the weather blocks the stars, Dark Sky Project cancels the tour and offers a full refund, a new date or a voucher. We'll still make the most of your day at the lake.
Can we add Aoraki / Mount Cook?
Yes. Aoraki / Mount Cook Village is about an hour beyond Lake Tekapo. See our Aoraki / Mount Cook day tour, which includes Lake Tekapo on the way.
Can you pick us up from a cruise ship?
Yes, from Lyttelton Port for the day tour. It suits longer port days, so send us your arrival and all-aboard times and we'll confirm what's possible. The stargazing evening doesn't fit around cruise schedules.
Are meals included?
Meals, stargazing tickets and activity fees aren't included. You'll have free time to choose from local cafés and restaurants, and we're happy to suggest places that suit your tastes and dietary needs.
Do you have child seats?
Yes. NZ-compliant child seats are available on request. Just include your children's ages when you enquire. A minimum age applies for stargazing tours.
