Common Questions

How far is Kaikōura from Christchurch?

Kaikōura is about 180 km north of Christchurch, around 2.5 hours' drive. Your driver breaks up the journey with stops along the coast.

Where can we see seals in Kaikōura?

New Zealand fur seals live around the Kaikōura Peninsula all year, and you'll often see them on the rocks near the Point Kean car park. Pups are born in summer. Please keep a respectful distance.

Can we add whale watching?

Yes. Whale watching is an optional extra. Allow about 3 hours and 15 minutes, and expect a longer day. Let us know when you enquire and we'll plan the day around your cruise time.

What if whale watching is cancelled?

Cruises depend on sea conditions. If yours is cancelled, we'll make the most of the day on the coast, with the seal colony, the peninsula and lunch.

Why is Kaikōura famous for crayfish?

The name Kaikōura comes from kai (food) and kōura (crayfish). Crayfish is still caught along the coast, alongside other local seafood.

Can you pick us up from a cruise ship?

Yes, from Lyttelton Port. Kaikōura suits longer port days. Send us your arrival and all-aboard times and we'll confirm what's possible. Whale watching may not fit around a shorter port day.

Are meals included?

Meals and activity fees aren't included. You'll have free time to choose from local cafés and seafood spots, and we're happy to suggest places that suit your tastes and dietary needs.

Do you have child seats?

Yes. NZ-compliant child seats are available on request. Just include your children's ages when you enquire.
