Common Questions

How far is Mount Cook from Christchurch?

Aoraki / Mount Cook Village is about 4 to 5 hours' drive from Christchurch. Your driver breaks up the journey with stops in Fairlie, at Lake Tekapo and at Lake Pukaki.

Can you do Mount Cook as a day trip from Christchurch?

Yes, though it's a long day of 11 to 12 hours. Travelling privately means you can rest between stops and set the pace. If you'd rather slow down, we can include it in a multi-day tour, and starting in Christchurch and building towards the Alps is one of the best ways to plan it.

What if Mount Cook is in cloud?

Alpine weather changes quickly, and the peak can be hidden by cloud. Your driver watches the conditions and adjusts the stops to make the most of the views. If the forecast looks poor, we'll talk to you about moving the date where possible.

In winter, snow and ice can affect the roads, which is one more reason a private driver beats a rental car in the Southern Alps.

Is the glacier walk difficult?

The Tasman Glacier viewpoint is a short, steep walk with more than 300 steps, about 30 minutes return. If steps are hard for anyone in your group, there's a flatter alternative to the lake shore.

Can we walk the Hooker Valley Track?

The Hooker Valley Track takes about 3 hours return, so it's hard to fit into a day trip from Christchurch. Let us know if it's a priority, and we'll plan a longer day or an overnight stay.

Can you pick us up from a cruise ship?

Mount Cook is too far to fit around most cruise schedules. For a shorter day from Lyttelton, see our Lake Tekapo day tour.

Are meals included?

Meals and entry fees aren't included. You'll have free time to choose from the village's cafés and restaurants, and we're happy to suggest places that suit your tastes and dietary needs.

Do you have child seats?

Yes. NZ-compliant child seats are available on request. Just include your children's ages when you enquire.
